Maine pickups fail in a way that mirrors the way the state really functions. Most of our volume comes from Portland and the southern coast (South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Falmouth) – finance and biotech types headed to downtown Toronto, MaineHealth doctors getting used to Ontario hospital systems, and Canadian families coming home after time at Bowdoin or Bates. Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn are less important, mostly paper industry transfers and academics from the University of Maine. Coastal Maine (Camden, Bar Harbor, Kennebunkport): Seasonal pickups from Canadians selling summer homes after years of cross-border ownership.

Maine’s geography creates two operational realities that are unique. Coastal pickups in historic harbor towns often have narrow lanes, low-clearance bridges, and seasonal road weight restrictions during the spring “mud season”—we coordinate shuttle trucks when the main trailer can’t get in. Inland and northern Maine pickups (Aroostook County, the North Woods) may take longer than the usual 2-3 days due to limited road infrastructure. Volume based pricing locks at inventory check, access workarounds, seasonal routing do not change the contract rate at delivery in Toronto.

The pricing for Maine is a reflection of the 745 mile trip from New England, through upstate New York and into Ontario. Pickup logistics include shuttle trucks for narrow harbor town streets, spring road weight restrictions in inland Maine, and extended pickup windows for shipments in Aroostook County and the North Woods.

Truck Route from Portland to Toronto

One of the few US routes where the Maine-to-Ontario routing makes more sense than Buffalo or Detroit is the Thousand Islands Bridge. The Alexandria Bay crossing is about midway along the natural eastbound path from New England, saving transit time over dipping south to Buffalo. Portland drivers drive west on I-95 South into Massachusetts. They switch to I-90 West (Mass Pike) toward Albany. From Albany, I-87 North to Watertown, then I-81 South to the Thousand Islands crossing at Alexandria Bay/Lansdowne. After Canadian customs, the truck travels west on Highway 401 across Ontario to the GTA. Pickups in central/northern Maine (Bangor) could use I-95 South to connect to the normal route at Portland. Pickups in coastal Maine (Bar Harbor, Camden) will use US-1 South to join I-295 and the main corridor.
