Michigan is the shortest US-to-Toronto lane on our schedule, and one of the busiest. The bulk of the volume is within the Detroit and adjacent metro (Dearborn, Warren, Sterling Heights, Troy, Royal Oak). Automotive industry transfers between Big Three operations and Canadian assembly plants in Oakville, Brampton and Oshawa are ongoing along this corridor. Grand Rapids has a different mix: Steelcase and Herman Miller furniture industry transfers, Spectrum Health professionals going to Toronto medical institutions and Canadians finishing up stints at Calvin University or Grand Valley State.

The route is short, normally 3-5 days under normal conditions, so we are occasionally able to pick up next week, sometimes same week for partial loads. Detroit pickups often need access coordination at automaker facilities (Ford, GM, Stellantis sites have their own truck protocols). Older Detroit row-housing in Corktown or Grosse Pointe sometimes requires shuttle truck support. Volume-based pricing locks at inventory check in Michigan. Even with same-week scheduling the contract figure stays fixed through the short Ambassador Bridge crossing into Toronto.

What Is The Cost Of Moving From Detroit To Toronto?

Type of Move Estimated Cost
Small Move $459 to $999
1 Bedroom Apartment $999 to $2,169
2 Bedroom Apartment $2,169 to $3,759
3 Bedroom House $3,839 to $5,009
Office Relocation $1,259 to $7,509

Inventory Volume (Cubic Feet) + Route/Distance + Destination Logistics

The short 240-mile trip over the Ambassador Bridge into Ontario is the reason behind the pricing of Michigan relocations. Pickup logistics include automaker facility protocols for the Detroit metro area Ford, GM and Stellantis facilities, shuttle truck support for Detroit’s older row-housing neighborhoods and standard same-week scheduling availability for partial loads due to the short corridor distance.

Truck Route from Detroit to Toronto

Michigan-to-Ontario is the easiest route in our network – Detroit and Toronto are basically linked by one bridge and one highway. Drivers from Detroit go south to the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor (or occasionally the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron if Ambassador traffic is heavy), clear Canadian customs and take Highway 401 East directly into the GTA. Transit is often under 24 hours where scheduling permits. Grand Rapids and western Michigan pickups add about half a day to the front leg – drivers head east on I-96 through Lansing to connect with I-94 East to Detroit. Northern Michigan pickups (Traverse City, Petoskey, Upper Peninsula) take longer, sometimes going through Sault Ste. Marie if consolidating with northern freight, but most still feed down to Detroit via I-75 South.
