Vermont is a quiet, low-frequency lane on our books – the state's small population (about 650,000 people total, less than the city of Mississauga) keeps shipment volume modest. Burlington and the Champlain Valley account for the majority of pickups, often UVM Medical Center physicians moving to Toronto teaching hospitals, IBM and GlobalFoundries semiconductor engineers transitioning to Canadian operations, and Middlebury College or UVM faculty heading to Ontario universities. Stowe, Killington, and other resort communities produce a smaller flow of seasonal property liquidations from Canadian and US owners moving full-time to the GTA.

What makes Vermont unusual is how the geography shapes pickups. Hill towns and rural addresses outside the Burlington-Montpelier corridor often have unpaved seasonal roads – town highways that are technically county-maintained but turn to mud during spring thaw (locally called "mud season" roughly mid-March through April). During those weeks, we sometimes need to stage a smaller truck near the paved network and shuttle items down. Old Vermont farmhouses and converted barns also tend to have low-clearance doorways and steep narrow staircases that slow loadout. Cubic foot pricing is set at inventory check – none of these access factors change the contract figure for delivery in Toronto.

How Much Does it Cost to Move from Burlington to Toronto?

Type of Move Estimated Cost
Small Move $489 to $1,079
1 Bedroom Apartment $1,079 to $2,339
2 Bedroom Apartment $2,339 to $4,039
3 Bedroom House $4,129 to $5,389
Office Relocation $1,349 to $8,069

Inventory Volume (Cubic Feet) + Distance/Route + Destination Logistics

Vermont quotes are cleaner than most US lanes because of the short distance – under 370 miles to Toronto puts this corridor in same-week scheduling territory for partial loads. The biggest variable on the pricing side is rural access. If pickup is on a town highway during mud season, or if a converted barn or 1850s farmhouse needs furniture maneuvered through tight stair turns, those factors come up at the inventory walk-through and sit inside the cubic-foot quote rather than appearing as add-ons later.

Truck Route from Burlington to Toronto

Vermont is one of the few US states where Thousand Islands Bridge is genuinely the fastest exit – Buffalo is a longer detour, and Detroit makes no sense. From Burlington, drivers head west on US-2 across the Champlain Islands and into New York at Rouses Point, then pick up I-87 South briefly before transferring to NY-374 and US-11 West toward Watertown. From there, I-81 South leads to the Thousand Islands crossing at Alexandria Bay/Lansdowne. After Canadian customs, Highway 401 West takes the truck across Ontario to the GTA. Total transit can be under 48 hours when scheduling permits. Montpelier, Barre, and central Vermont pickups follow I-89 North to Burlington before joining the standard route. Brattleboro and southern Vermont take a different first leg – drivers head south on I-91 to merge with I-90 West (Mass Pike), then north through Albany to I-87 and the same Thousand Islands corridor. Stowe and Mad River Valley resort pickups use VT-100 to connect with I-89.
