Buying a used piano: condition and total cost
Arrange an independent piano technician's inspection before paying for an acoustic piano. Cabinet appearance does not establish the condition of the action, soundboard or tuning stability. Yamaha's guidance on second-hand pianos also recommends a qualified technician's pre-purchase inspection.
Request the make, model, serial number, approximate age and available service records. Ask where the piano has been stored and when it was last serviced. Photograph problems with keys, pedals or the cabinet for the technician; tuning alone will not resolve every issue.
Add inspection, repairs, collection, delivery and any temporary storage to the purchase price. A piano offered free for collection can still have significant transport or repair costs. Ask your technician about the intended room environment, then agree the pickup window and who will release the instrument before paying.
Choosing a piano for a child's lessons
Start with the teacher's requirements, the student's course and the practice space at home. A label such as beginner does not establish whether an instrument suits the lessons or examinations.
- Ask what the teacher expects. Confirm the key range, pedals and features needed now and as lessons progress.
- Try acoustic and digital options. An acoustic instrument needs servicing and a suitable room; a digital piano may offer headphones and a smaller footprint. Compare actual models.
- Check the keyboard action. Ask about full-size, weighted keys and try the touch in person. Yamaha's explanation of weighted keys gives useful background.
- Test the seating and pedals. Ask the teacher to assess the playing position. Check whether the bench, stand, pedals, power supply and headphones are included.
- Plan home practice. Measure the space, allow for walking routes and cables, and test compatible headphones if needed. Read the return and warranty terms.
- Budget beyond the instrument. Include accessories, delivery and servicing. For a used acoustic piano, arrange the inspection described above.
- Check delivery access. Get the model, dimensions and weight from the seller or manufacturer. Review doors, stairs, landings and elevator bookings at both addresses.
What to check before paying for a piano
- Condition: For a used acoustic piano, consider an independent piano technician's inspection. Ask about tuning stability, action, soundboard and any repairs needed.
- Total purchase cost: Get the instrument price, delivery, stair or access charges, setup, warranty and any tuning arrangements in writing.
- Dimensions: Record the model and measurements. Photograph the pickup and delivery routes, including landings and tight turns.
- Building access: Check loading areas, elevator dimensions and booking windows with building management before choosing a delivery date.
- Collection responsibility: Agree who releases the instrument, who protects it for transport and who handles any assembly at delivery.
